Breakthrough (“What does this mean?”)

January 9th, 2008

When I initially conceived of this site I thought it would be a good place to work through some new techniques for producing art work. I wanted CLONESTAMP to exist as a companion site for MICHAELPODOLAK.com. It was to showcase a “behind the scenes” approach for how I make my work. That hasn’t changed really. On the other hand, I knew this would be a vague project to set out on…

I am image maker. Without a studio for the first time in 9 years, I knew that showing experiments here would most likely benefit only myself. At best, it would force me to work on new things in the absence of having a dedicated place to develop my art. Unfortunately, the plan to just do stuff seemed to lack direction. Better said, its relation to my previous work seemed to be in question. The “what does this mean?” factor was missing from the earliest conceived stages of CLONESTAMP.

I knew I wanted to use this site as an opportunity to branch out into sequential and generative based media: Code, Motion Graphics, Animation, etc. That too hasnt changed. Choosing this was not a matter of boredom, rather an interest in process. At the end of the day, I knew it would make me a better image maker, a better painter.

To my benefit, in reviewing my past work, I’ve come to realize the type of things I want to be doing. I am now able to discern the common purpose of using these new media and apply them to the general trajectory that my work was already heading along.

With that said, the purpose of this site is to document new systems and methods that both Create and Destroy a Body in Space. As much as this will be a generative process, it will be a deconstructive one as well. I will speak more at length about the theoretical end of this idea later, but for now let’s just say I am not withholding its output to one specific type of media. CLONESTAMP will document the work given towards both tasks.
